The exhibition on traditional Songye sculpture organized at the Maschio Angioino in Naples, curated by Bernard de Grunne and Gigi Pezzoli, represents one of the most important African art events that have taken place in Italy in recent years. The exhibition is the most considerable ever made to date on the sculptural art of the Songye, an African ethnic group settled in a large territory of the central region, south-eastern quadrant, of the present Democratic Republic of Congo. A unique opportunity to promote knowledge of the cultural richness of some apparently distant regions of Africa, freeing the mind from traditional stereotypes linked to still nineteenth-century concepts.
